USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination)

A graduate of a Philippine medical school who wishes to practice or undergo residency training in the US has to pass the USMLE.
USMLE is comprised of three-steps where Step 2 is divided into two exams.

The candidate must be a graduate of a medical school outside the US and Canada listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools as meeting ECFMG eligibility requirements

Step 1 – Basic Sciences
Those who are now studying medicine or graduates of Medicine can apply for step 1.
It is a one-day test, Students usually take this test at the end of the second year of med school.

Step 2 (CK) – Clinical Knowledge
Step 2 (CS) – Clinical Skills
The Eligibility criteria for this exam is the students must clear the USMLE step 1 Level.
Step 2 is a two-day test, Students usually take this test in the fourth year of med school.

Step 3 – Patient Management  

  • Must hold an MD or an equivalent degree from a medical school outside the US and Canada, which is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools as meeting ECFMG eligibility requirements.
  • Qualify Step 1, Step 2 CK, and Step 2 CS
  • Be ECFMG Certified
Step 3 is a two-day test and this is the final assessment, usually taken after the first year of residency.
